Denmark is located in northern Europe and is part of Scandinavia. Denmark consists of the Jutland peninsula, the larger islands of Zealand, Funen, and Lolland-Falster and 429 other named islands between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, 72 of which are inhabited.

Nowhere in Denmark is more than 50 km from the sea. And just a few kilometres from Denmark’s major cities of Aarhus and Copenhagen you find idyllic villages and pristine woodlands and lakes.

Entrance qualifications

For admission to a Bachelor’s, you will need certificates of prior educational qualifications, complete with original stamps and signatures. Qualifications from other countries are usually eligible, however to improve your application you might want to assess how your educational qualifications correspond to Danish ones at You may also be able to tell how your prior education compares to the Danish system by doing a transfer of credits. If this is not possible, non-EU students may be required to take an entrance exam.

To embark on a Master’s program in Denmark, a Bachelor’s that is relevant to your chosen subject matter and worth the same number of credits as a Danish degree (180 ECTS) is required. For admission to a PhD, you usually need to have a recognized Master’s or the equivalent in ECTS. In some cases, a longer four-year PhD program is offered to students who have a Bachelor’s degree plus one year of postgraduate study.

Proof of language proficiency

Because Denmark is a small country with a relatively small number of native speakers, many programs in Danish universities are taught in English. Entry onto these courses requires proof of a high level of English. Applicants to undergraduate and postgraduate programs must prove proficiency comparable to ‘English B’ in the Danish secondary school system as a minimum. Proficiency is determined by international language tests TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge ESOL (CAE). If you wish to undertake your degree in Danish, you will need to prove your proficiency in Danish by taking the ‘Danish as a Foreign Language’ test (Studieprøven i dansk som andetsprog) or ‘Danish Test 2’ (Danskprøve 2).

Fees –
International students must pay tuition fees. Annual tuition fees for full-time degree students range from DKK 45,000-120,000 (˜ USD 8,000-21,000 / Euro 6,000 to 16,000).
Please check with the institution of your interest.
(Higher education in Denmark is free for students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland)

Rent – varies from 2,500 – 4,000 DKK (utilities are usually included)
Food – 1,500-2,000 DKK

Process to Apply

Application – Student need to apply with all credentials starting from class X till last qualification. University will assess and get back the student with an ‘offer letter’. Next step for the student is to submit the Tuition fees payment. Once the university receives the Tuition fees payment they issue visa form ST1.

Visa – After receiving the ST1 form student will have to call the Embassy in their country / city. (India has embassy in New Delhi and Consulate Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai) and get an appointment for the file submission. Applicant has to get his/her last education documents attested first by regional authentication center of the state from where the degree is issued and then by Ministry of External affair.

Student has to submit the file on his own to Embassy/Consulate and should carry his/her Original academics/passport. After 6-7 weeks of file submission student will be interviewed on phone (if applicable in your country).

After 2-3 weeks of interview student will get the passport couriered on correspondence address

Temporary accommodation: Denmark has many safe budget hotels for students to book on temporary basis. Cost usually is : 80$ – 150$ per night on single occupancy.

Higher Education in Denmark is free for EU/EEA students while non-EU/EEA students have to pay tuition fee of around 6,000 to 16,000 Euros. To attract excellent non-EU/EEA students, the Danish Government and Institutions provide a number of scholarships for international students for study in Denmark.
